Juya Shin 신주연
Originally from South Korea, Juya SHIN is based in Germany where she is the Assistant Conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne. Throughout 2025/26, she works closely with Andrés Orozco-Estrada on subscription and touring programmes, as well as on Cologne Opera productions such as Le nozze di Figaro, Hänsel und Gretel, and Manon Lescaut. She also conducts the Gürzenich Orchestra in concerts outside their main season at the Cologne Philharmonie.
This appointment follows her experience last season as London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Fellow Conductor. During 2024/25, Shin conducted the LPO in their regional series in Brighton, and in special projects at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall. Her programmes ranged from Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade to relaxed performances for younger audiences, to new commissions as part of the LPO’s Debut Sounds series. In 2024, she was also selected by Classic FM as a “Rising Star”.
Shin’s 2025/26 guest highlights include MDR-Sinfonieorchester, Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Bruckner Orchester Linz, and a 12-concert tour across The Netherlands with PhilZuid with repertoire by Fanny Mendelssohn and Nannerl Mozart. In recent seasons, she has also worked with Göttinger Symphonieorchester, Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Ensemble Modern, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Sinfonia Iuventus at Polish Radio Warsaw, and Sinfonia Rotterdam.
In the opera world, Shin spent two consecutive summers at the Georg Solti Accademia in Italy – having first participated as a Young Artist on their Solti-Peretti Répétiteur course, she returned as a Conductor on their Bel Canto programme. She trained intensively in Germanic repertoire with Stefan Blunier at the Nationaltheater-Orchester Mannheim, Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin and Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern. Aged 19, she made her first venture with Die Zauberflöte at Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, before returning for Le nozze di Figaro and Die Fledermaus.
This season at Gürzenich Orchestra, she works alongside Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Sakari Oramo, Maxim Emelyanychev, Susanna Mälkki, Elim Chan, Thomas Adés, amongst others. Previously, as part of her LPO Fellowship, Shin assisted conductors Ed Gardner, Vladimir Jurowski, Karina Canellakis, and Andrey Boreyko. Shin has also participated in masterclasses with Karina Canellakis and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic with Manfred Honeck and Jaap van Zweden and Gstaad Festival Conducting Academy with Jaap van Zweden and Johannes Schlaefli respectively. Having spent part of her formative training at the Zurich University of the Arts with Johannes Schlaefli, Shin concludes her Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting at Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts in 2026.
