Juya Shin 신주연
Selected by Classic FM as one of their “30 under 30” Rising Stars for 2024, South Korean conductor Juya SHIN(based in Germany) is the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2024/25 Fellow Conductor and has been gaining recognition for her expressive interpretations andrefined conducting technique.
In spring 2025, Shin conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a regional subscription concert at the Brighton Dome featuring Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. She returns later this season to conduct a number of relaxed concerts and contemporary music projects at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall.
2024/25 highlights elsewhere include returns to Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, her debut at Polish Radio Warsaw conducting Bacewicz’s Symphony 3, and concerts with the Göttinger Symphonieorchester featuring music by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn. Plans further ahead include an extensive concert tour across the Netherlands, while recent engagements include Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Ensemble Modern, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Nürnberger Symphoniker, and Sinfonia Rotterdam.
Juggling a growing diary of professional commitments with development opportunities, this season Shin conducts the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in their inaugural and exclusive masterclass with Karina Canellakis. Other masterclasses from recent years include Jaap van Zweden and Johannes Schlaefli at the 2024 Gstaad Festival Conductor Academy, as well as Manfred Honeck and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
As an assistant conductor, this season Shin works alongside the London Philharmonic’stitled conductors Edward Gardner, Vladimir Jurowski, Karina Canellakis, as well as AndreyBoreyko, in subscription concerts and on tour to Vienna Musikverein, Badenbaden Festspielhaus, and Frankfurt Alte Oper. Prior experience includes assisting Edward Gardnerand Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Markus Stenz and Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, and Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música with Stefan Blunier.
In the opera world, Shin spent two consecutive summers at the Georg Solti Accademia in Italy, working with esteemed artists such as Richard Bonynge and Jonathan Papp. Originally a Young Artist on their Solti-Peretti Répétiteur course, she returned in 2024 as Conductorand Coach of their Bel Canto course. Fluent in German, she pursued intensive studies in Wagner repertoire with Stefan Blunier at the Nationaltheater-Orchester Mannheim, Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin, and Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, making her first venture aged 19 with Die Zauberflöte at Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, before returning for Le nozze di Figaro and Die Fledermaus.
Having studied at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts and Zurich University of the Arts with Johannes Schlaefli and Christoph Mathias Mueller, this year Shin continues her final master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts.
