Originally from South Korea, Juya Shin is based in Germany, where her role as Assistant Conductor of the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln has now been extended for another season, following a stellar step-in for Elim Chan with the orchestra in December 2025 and emphasizing a strong relationship with the ensemble. This success also brought opportunities for Juya to conduct the orchestra herself, including a joint project between the Gürzenich-Orchester and the Jugendsinfonieorchester der Rheinischen Musikschule in June 2026. Throughout 2026/27, Juya will carry on working closely with Andrés Orozco-Estrada on subscription and touring programmes, as well as on Cologne Opera productions, and will also conduct the orchestra in concerts outside their main season at the Cologne Philharmonie.
This appointment follows her recent experience as the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Fellow Conductor. During 2024/25, Shin conducted the LPO in their regional series in Brighton, and in special projects at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall. Her programmes ranged from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazadeto relaxed performances for younger audiences, to new commissions as part of the LPO’s Debut Sounds series. In 2024, she was also selected by Classic FM as a “Rising Star”.
The 2026/27 season will see Juya debut with several orchestras: Orchestre d’Avignon, Bremer Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal, Orkest Phion, and the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, in an 11-concert run of the Nutcracker Suite with dates in Stuttgart and on tour to the Tonhalle Zürich. She also returns to the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, and will conduct the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln for their Female Voices of Resilience concert, amongst others.
In recent seasons, she has also worked with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Bruckner Orchester Linz, PhilZuid, MDR-Sinfonieorchester, Göttinger Symphonieorchester, Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Sinfonia Iuventus at Polish Radio Warsaw, and the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester.
In the opera world, Shin spent two consecutive summers at the Georg Solti Accademia in Italy – having first participated as a Young Artist on their Solti-Peretti Répétiteur course, she returned as a Répétiteur on their Bel Canto programme. She trained intensively in Germanic repertoire at the Nationaltheater-Orchester Mannheim with Stefan Blunier, Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin, and Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern.
This season at the Gürzenich-Orchester, she works alongside Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Sakari Oramo, Thomas Søndergård, Riccardo Minasi, Ton Koopman, Rubén Dubrovsky, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, Antonello Manacorda, and Michael Sanderling. Previously, as part of her LPO Fellowship, Shin assisted conductors Edward Gardner, Vladimir Jurowski, Karina Canellakis, and Andrey Boreyko. Shin has also participated in masterclasses with Manfred Honeck and Jaap van Zweden and the Seoul Philharmonic, Karina Canellakis and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and at the Gstaad Festival Conducting Academy with Jaap van Zweden and Johannes Schlaefli.
Having spent part of her formative training at the Zurich University of the Arts with Johannes Schlaefli, Shin graduated from her Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts in 2026.
